Crystal Universe Pace Gallery
TeamLab's Infinite Crystal Universe, 2015-2018. Image courtesy of Pace Gallery. Last month, I had the opportunity to talk to Pace Gallery. Crystal Universe. This artwork uses an accumulation of light points to create a sculptural body, similar to the way distinct dots of color form an image in a pointillist painting. In Crystal Universe, the particles of light are digitally controlled and change based on the viewer’s interactivity with the work.
This stand-alone takes place across the globe during the height of World War II and features a completely new cooperative skirmish game mode with access to five different nations (Russia, Germany, USA, Commonwealth and – for the first time ever in the Men of War series - Japan) as well as increased realism and accessibility. Men of War: Assault Squad Singleplayer DemoMen of War: Assault Squad is the brand new title in the Men of War series. Men assault squad 2.
TeamLab,The Infinite Crystal Universe, 2018, interactive installation of light sculpture, LED, endless, sound: teamLab Photo/©teamLab; teamLab is represented by Pace GalleryAnd that's where teamLab really gets interesting – and what puts the experience of being in one of its 'arenas' a more alternative adventure than even the dotty thrill of walking around in the 'cosmos' of Yayoi Kusama's ubiquitous Infinity Mirror Rooms. The people in SuperNature influence and become a part of the artworks themselves.
As such, people become one with the art, and make creative choices about how they see and what they see, blurring perceptions between appearance and reality, and of the self and the world. The show is comprised of various different teamLab ecosystems, almost as though moving through the cosmos on separate planets. Through The Infinite Crystal Universe, people can use their smartphones to select elements that make up the universe by dragging and releasing them. Each element of the universe sent into the work then influences the other elements and is constantly changing depending upon the presence of people in the space. It is thus an evolving but never finite work.
