Browsing through my steam library, remembered I have a handful of Sakura Novels from the humble bundle a while back. However I don’t remember any of them being remotely good imo save Sakura Fantasy Chapter one - and even that was just a bare pass once I compared it to other visual novels not from the franchise.I’ve only played a few, but from the ones that I have and what other friends have told me, I have a wavering opinion on them. As apparently ((and I STRESS this, this post is about my curiosity not me slagging on the Sakura series)) story wise their novels kinda suck.The story seems textbook and kinda overly simplified and dumb. The girls always end up in not-quite-hentai situations, a couple of the games felt boring after a while. The art work is lovely to look at, but I did feel bored to tears - especially in Sakura Spirit.I have been told, and also somewhat assume, that their novels are more for fan service and the meme of playing it rather than enjoying it.

What do y’all think? I haven’t played nearly all of them, only; (I’ll list it out in case someone cares to know lol) Sakura Angels, Sakura Spirit, Sakura Beach 1 & 2 and Sakura Fantasy Chapter 1.Do they care about the story quality? Are they made for quality? Am I just stupidly reading too into things?.

This is technically a discussion I guess so I'll approve it.The Sakura series are almost universally mocked in places like this for having some of the worst writing, bland characters and milquetoast stories of the entire medium. The art is the only thing about the franchise with any level of consistent competency and even then the designs are extremely cookie-cutter and feel pretty rushed. They're very transparent money-making machines that are designed to hook horny teens on Steam who just wanna see some 2d boobs. They lack any form of integrity by design and if you're looking for anything more than anime boobs or ironic enjoyment your time is better spent elsewhere.I'll be surprised if any sakura fans here come out of the woodwork to offer a dissenting opinion, but hey, i hope they do. I know you're stressed out from all of the Corona Blossom indiegogo mishaps, but I didn't know it was that bad and I know part of it is my fault for not noticing it earlier: Now that I look back on it, I don't see any reason why you would be throwing money at Winged Cloud's Kickstarter campaign if you were in the right state of mind and I hate myself more and more for not realizing it.It feels like I wasted my time playing Doki Doki Literature Club three times and couldn't actualize it's message of So I will make it up now.+1-555-359-2983.

That's my phone number. I'm here for you. I think the only one I've paid for outside of that Humble bundle is Sakura Dungeon and it's the only one I'd recommend to play. I haven't particularly enjoyed the others I've played because of how bad the stories usually are. Sakura Dungeon's story isn't great but it's better than some of the other Sakura games that I've played. It's also an RPG rather than a visual novel, and I genuinely enjoyed the dungeon crawling and battle mechanics of the game.If the bundle you got was the same one I'm thinking of (Sakura Hunie Bundle) it should have that game, so I'd say try that one out, maybe idle in the others for cards.The art is really the only selling point for the rest of the games, and I can't buy any of the games in good faith with regards to that because of how the poorly the artist at Winged Cloud is treated.

I personally swore off any actions that would give Winged Cloud any money after watching video about shady practices that have gone into making the games. Sakura Fantasy was actually decent and easily one of their best products if not the best.

I was actually getting into it. And then chapter 1 ended and they decided to abandon chapter 2.

Like why, you actually had something respectable going and then you threw it away.I think Sakura Dungeon was their other decent product. It was pretty basic as far as dungeon crawler mechanics go but was still fun to play and had a good bit of gameplay hours. The story was passable and I got a few laughs out of the dialogue at least. It feels like they at least tried in this one. I'd like to present an alternative viewpoint: Sakura Spirit TRIED.When Sakura Spirit first came out on Steam in 2014 (yes, that long ago), it was a surprising breakthrough. Visual Novels didn't really have any presence on Steam yet, nor did 'sexy' games. Sakura Spirit still has that 'This game includes nudity and explicit sexual dialog.'

Warning text on its store page, something that did not appear since. Every youtuber from Game Grumps to little Johnny played it. It's clear that no matter how much you want to deny it, Sakura Spirit was a massive success and a pioneer for VNs on Steam. 'But Sakura Spirit is filled with anime tiddies, why would it still try?' Because they had to. In a way, it tried to break the limits of the biggest digital distribution platform for games, and it succeeded.But how does Sakura Spirit stand out from the rest?

They haven't made a porn patch for it. The game itself is much longer than the other Sakura games. It also had different writers. From Sakura Fantasy onward, Story & Writing credit has been given to someone called 'Liberty'. However, in Sakura Spirit they have been credited to 'Tsuyuri & Silva'. I remember around the time for Sakura Angels, Winged Cloud had contacted a friend of mine and asked him to write what would essentially become Sakura Swim Club, with a couple of CGs done by Wanaca to confirm the fact, which is why I was aware of this writing shift.

If you check Winged Cloud's history, you can see that they even have a non-Sakura game between Spirit and Angels called Pyrite Heart. (Edit: According to VNDB, Pyrite Heart was Winged Cloud's first VN) With it's lack of boobage, it didn't succeed so well.What do I believe?

Sakura Spirit was supposed to be a parody, making fun of ecchi animes and VNs with their 'oh so close' moments for titty. Especially Sakura Angels, which just makes fun of the whole idea with the MC's inner monologue essentially becoming a narrator with ADD at a certain moment.
