Axiom Verge Red Coat
Axiom Verge is a science fiction-themed Metroidvania video game developed entirely by Thomas Happ and published by Thomas Happ Games for PlayStation 4 on 2014-03-21, and then later ported to several other platforms. You play a scientist named Trace who, after and experiment mishap, is transported to another planet where a most of the occupants are either dead or dying after a deadly pathogen.
While other games share similar qualities to the classic action-platforming series, Axiom Verge for PlayStation 4 pays homage to it in both visuals and gameplay. The 16-bit style, the bizarre alien world, huge bosses, and the doors that connect the 700-plus rooms together screams Metroid. That doesn’t mean Axiom Verge is a ripoff.
Developer Thomas Happ crafted an original sci-fi story with cool twists and seemingly endless exploration.Just when I think I’m done with a level, I’ll see an extra set of bricks I can drill through or a secret area I can warp to. Axiom Verge is a phenomenal achievement for its one-man team. What you’ll likeCorrupting the world of SudraOne of Axiom Verge’s more unusual tools is the Address Disruptor. It shoots out a ray that can remove specific obstacles, but you’ll use it more as a defensive weapon to change the behavior of your enemies (except for bosses). Each creature reacts in different ways — some become even more dangerous — but for the most part, glitching enemies makes them more docile or weak. When you point the disruptor at a tree-shaped foe that sends out harmful energy clumps, it becomes a block of scrambled textures and pumps out health orbs instead. A small, shelled creature with a red laser attack turns into an ally, shooting out a blue laser that can destroy other enemies or break bricks.Being able to manipulate parts of the world as you see fit is freeing.
It gives you a sense of control and ownership over your gameplay experience. Image Credit: Giancarlo Valdes/GamesBeatDoing something you’re not supposed toSome of Axiom Verge’s items gave me the feeling that I was doing something wrong or something that Happ didn’t intend for the player to do. It’s weird to think of it like that because he obviously programmed everything. But Axiom Verge maintains a strong illusion that you can actually “break” the game. Take the lab coat, for instance. This allows you to pass between thin walls by double-tapping the D-pad. The animation sequence helps sell that rebelliousness: harsh static sounds and black and white images pop up as you squeeze through the other side.
I loved watching it every time. The drone is also a good tool for exploring areas off the normal path. You send out a bug to crawl through small tunnels (like Metroid’s morph ball). Axiom Verge has plenty of these areas for the drone, but I had a lot of fun with it halfway through the game. A huge gap prevented me from going back to an earlier level.
Since I couldn’t make the jump, I ended up running for it and shot the drone to the other side while I was in the air. I was so damn happy when it worked. My drone had a small health bar back then, so I wasn’t able to do much. But revisiting that level with a weaker character was like a challenge of its own: How far back can I go before it dies? I’m not sure if Happ also had this in mind, but it’s satisfying to think I may have subverted the game in my own way.A long trail of secretsAxiom Verge is a haven for players who love to find every little secret in a game. After 25 hours of playing, I discovered just 95 percent of the map and found 14 weapons out of a total of 24. I’m sure I also missed a bunch of health and weapon upgrades.
And that’s just the stuff on the surface.I have no idea what to do with the password system or the notes I found written in indecipherable alien languages. Glitch rooms — special areas meant to like Game Genie — are hard to find, too. I’d only found one of them by the time I finished the game. Image Credit: Giancarlo Valdes/GamesBeat What you won’t likeObjectives are too vague or nonexistentAxiom Verge only has a few cutscenes that tell you where to go. At first, I didn’t mind — getting lost is part of the experience — but the lack of direction became annoying toward the end. When I hadn’t discovered much of the map, it was easy to ignore my frustrations. I was always seeing something new: levels, enemies, perhaps a boss.
But once I had seen nearly everything, the search process was way more repetitive.I was heading to the final boss, but when I got there, I couldn’t move on without using an ability that I didn’t have. It took me a few hours to backtrack through the whole map (my second time doing so), but I didn’t find much other than additional weapons. I couldn’t think of anything major that I missed along the way.
So I stopped for a few days while I reached out to people I knew who were also playing the game. The answer was more obvious than I was expecting, but it would’ve taken me hours more to reach that point on my own.Tough to keep track of where you’ve beenSudra is an incredibly diverse place to explore. One level looks like the inside of a huge monster’s belly while another contains a glimpse at what the planet was like before an evil force arrived.
Despite its variety, I had a tough time keeping track of where I’d been (adding to the hours already spent backtracking). The map gives an overall view of the planet, but it didn’t help much when it came to figuring out specific rooms I was looking for.Happ was clearly aiming for an old-school vibe with Axiom Verge. I just wish the map had more of a modern update for people like me who easily get lost and end up seeing the same rooms over and over. ConclusionAxiom Verge uses Metroid’s building blocks to create a fantastic adventure that can stretch for hours if you want it to though maybe not always in a good way. I’m not a big fan of the genre, but even I started getting obsessive over my map and item completion rates. I’ll just leave it to the rest of the community to fill in the blanks.Score: 83/100Axiom Verge came out on March 31 for PlayStation 4 for $20.
PlayStation Vita and PC versions are also in the works. Thomas Happ Games LLC provided GamesBeat with a digital code of the game for the purpose of this review.
This guide's maps have numbers within them with each number representing an item. You can then reference that number to see what the item is, items needed to get it, how to get it, and screenshot(s) showing precisely where the item is.I decided to make this guide because when I went for 100% I was annoyed that the various maps told me an item was in a square, but it didn't tell you how to get that particular item or where exactly it was.
This wasn't a problem for me except a handful of times, but I love this game so much I wanted to make such a guide for other people. I still encourage you to look for the item yourself first because that's where the fun in a game like this comes from.
If that fails use this guide to relieve your frustration. Sometimes I will forget or accidentally acquire an item before I screenie it, in which case I will be positioned on top of where the item was in the screenie. The order of the items (01, 02, 03, etc.) is the order I got them as I replayed through the game. If you find yourself stuck and don't know what to do, find where you are in the number order (by finding the number of the last ability you acquired) and move forward from there.Later in the game I will save a lot of powerups until I get the final ability, the red coat. The red coat makes getting many powerups much simpler, and you will likely have really good weapons and high health by then too.Secret worlds are hidden throughout the maps. The entrances are random until you make a new game, then they are locked in for that save file, so you'll have to use a map that shows their possible locations and search for them. Only 1 hard secret world is ever generated and it always contains one of three very powerful weapons (Heatseeker, Webslicer, Fatbeam). Nothing you find in the secret worlds count towards your percentages; they are purely bonuses. The game will show a yellow dot in the upper right of your map screen if you've found all items for that map, and a purple dot if you've uncovered all areas of that map.The Address Disruptor (what you use to glitch enemies) I call the Glitch Gun throughout the guide.
It makes enemies easier to kill and in some cases are necessary to get an item (I will describe this if it's the case). The Grapple Hook is not needed to beat the game, but it does let you get some items early. It gets superseded by the drone teleport ability much later in the game.Drone Tele Jumping: Using the drone teleport ability and drone launch distance ability it is possible to gain infinite height. This technique isn't needed for any items, but it makes getting some much easier. First you jump as high as you can then launch the drone straight up in the air. Continue holding up and when the drone reaches the peak of its height, press the drone launch button again to spawn it and quickly press it again to teleport to the drone.
Immediately and briefly use the laser drill to reset the drone launch time so you can fire it again immediately. Fire the drone again, straight up in the air, and repeat the process. The Passcode Tool has its own menu along with the map, inventory, and notes. This is where you input the passwords.Using the quit to title menu option is a great way to save time backtracking, because when you reload you spawn at the last used save station. It also doesn't count towards your deaths if you're going for that achievement. The following green bug thing will drop a health node fragment if you use your glitch gun on it, but only once. The item doesn't count for the yellow dot of item completion on a map, but it does count for 100% total items.

Then enter the right door, and if you're lucky he will spawn near the red orb and shoot it for you.
If he doesn't try again.119: Note (26)How to get: Glitch dash down from where you got item 118. He starts out at the bottom.
Glitch him and then whichever way you move, he moves. Use this to maneuver him up there, then fire so he fires and opens the laser gate.
Then continue to the item.124: Note (28)How to get: Use the drone to get here, then move all the way to the right to get the item hiding in the wall. The cursed crusade system requirements. After I posted my last comment I noticed a comment further below, about glitching a slug in Indi or Ukkin-Na. I checked this out and confirmed it: It's those green things that crawl back and forth, if they're green when they burst you'll be beset by a swarm of red insects or something, but if you glitch it first, it'll turn (or flash) red. Then if you let it burst (move close to it, don't shoot it with your weapon) the first one you let do this releases a Health Node Fragment, ever after that first one it's always that red stuff that refills your health bar.
Getting this fragment will let you complete your health bar out to 16 bars total, and your inventory screen will show x14 for the Health Nodes if you got everything. I haven't confirmed if this can be done with the level 1 version of Address Disrupter/Glitch Gun or if it has to be Level 2.
