When Ace of Spades released officially I immediately bought it just as quickly got bored of it. Its community is mostly dead as far as i can tell and i just didn't enjoy it like the original. Meanwhile the community that fell in love with the classic Ace of Spades created their own community that is still alive and well.The reason I think Ace of Spades Classic works where it successor fails is in the fact that it treats warfare with respect and makes building essential.

In build & Shoot you might as well consider any shot to be fatal, You are a boxy sprite with a massive head and a headshot is an instant kill, In this game it's not difficult to kill people, it's much harder to survive.If you don't get behind cover you are dead. If you stick your head out of cover for too long you are dead, if you stay in one spot you are dead.

Building is essential to making any ground, you can't just cross no man's land, you have to set up trenches, tunnels, bunkers, all for a few inches of ground. A match can go on for hours without either side winning, meanwhile the landscape slowly starts to resemble swiss cheese, pits and hidden tunnels lie exposed, half destroyed bunkers lay ontop of even more destroyed bunkers, the uneven pockmarked landscape making it even harder to move forward and even harder to spot hidden enemies. Its one of the few shooters that i keep coming back to and it's the only one of its kind that really sucks me into what trench warfare was really like.TLDR:Imagine if WW1 trench warfare and minecraft had a baby.You can try it out for free here, its only a 13.6MB download.

Build and Shoot was great back when it was Ace of Spades, there were no custom maps, and no machine guns or shotguns. Just a bunch of guys with rifles and a bunch of procgen hills for them to die on defending. Or die in defending.The hands down most amazing part was the apparent. Functionally, they were equal. Same tools, same rifles, same hitboxes, just different colors. But in practice, the blues were,. This was because the random maps were always generated in such a way that there was a wide river cutting the map in a roughly 70/30 ratio, giving the blues the vast majority of the hilly map, enclosing the greens on their little flat chunk of land.

It was easy for blues to, and then set up sniping bunkers and trenches on the overlooking hills to take potshots at greens, who in defense used their flat terrain to., and in fact a survey on a certain blog found the vast majority of players 'mained' a color, in an almost perfect 50/50 ratio between green and blue, with only a very small minority being apathetic in terms of team choice. You were either blue for life, or green for life, no disloyalty. You knew what you were signing up for when picking a team, and you stuck to your choice.Custom maps kinda broke that whole thing by being mostly symmetrical, and Build and Shoot allows all kinds of team colors so it's all muddy.

Last I played the most popular map was a literal giant brick with a little canyon going from one base to the other, through which players were funneled. I've always been opposed to custom maps even before they were added, of fear that this would happen.

I still play every now and then, but it's nowhere near as fun as it was back in the glorious Green vs Blue days. For The Green and Glory!.
